from Time Magazine, circa 1943

Kau Kau Corner had a huge sign out in front. It is reputed to be the most photographed sign in the world at the time (see most photographed barn). The sign, titled "Crossroads of the Pacific" notated the distance from Hawai'i to New York, to Alaska, to Shanghai, to Midway, to Tokyo, to Los Angeles, to London, to San Francisco, to Sydney, and to Manila.

On one hand, the image on the sign is a humorous ploy used by many places around the world to claim its centrality on earth.
